For credit unions serving low-income communities, recovering from severe weather events like hurricanes and major flooding can create a huge strain on infrastructure and members. To help, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has announced that grant funds are available through its Community Development Revolving Loan Fund (CDRLF) Newly Chartered and Urgent Need program.

Eligible credit unions impacted by recent natural disasters can receive up to $15,000 to support immediate recovery efforts and restore uninterrupted financial services to their members.

What Can the Grant Funds Be Used For?

Grants through the Urgent Need program are designed to provide rapid relief for critical operational and member-facing needs, including:

  • Infrastructure Repairs: Fixing physical damage sustained by the credit union building during a storm or flood.
  • Equipment Replacement: Replacing essential equipment needed to quickly restore services following unexpected emergencies, such as power outages.
  • Member Relief Services: Funding specialized financial programs, such as disaster relief loans that help members cover personal recovery costs.

How and When to Apply

  • No Hard Deadline, But Speed Matters: While the NCUA has not set a strict application deadline, affected credit unions are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible following an emergency to ensure prompt disbursement of funds.
  • Review Guidelines: Interested institutions should carefully review the Newly Chartered and Urgent Need Grant Guidelines for precise eligibility requirements and submission instructions.
  • Need Help? Credit unions with questions about the application process can reach out directly to the NCUA’s Office of Credit Union Resources and Expansion (CURE) via email at CUREAPPS@ncua.gov or by phone at 703-518-6610.
